Understanding MSMAware: A Comprehensive Guide to Urban Drainage Design in Malaysia
Urban drainage design is a critical aspect of infrastructure development, especially in regions with unique rainfall patterns and topographical challenges. In Malaysia, MSMAware serves as an essential tool for engineers and planners, enabling effective water management practices.
What is MSMAware?
MSMAware is an online software specifically designed to align with MSMA, which stands for “Manual Saliran Mesra Alam Malaysia” or the “Urban Stormwater Management Manual for Malaysia.” Published by the Jabatan Pengairan dan Saliran Malaysia (JPS), this software facilitates compliance with national drainage design standards.
The core functionalities of MSMAware encompass:
- Computing design storm Intensity-Frequency-Duration (IFD) curves for various locations in Malaysia, adhering to the Second Edition of MSMA (2011), HP1 (2021) for West Malaysia, and HP26 (2018) for East Malaysia.
- Calculating peak discharges through the Rational Method and generating discharge hydrographs using the Time-Area Method.
- Designing On-Site Detention (OSD) and detention basins or ponds tailored to specific locations.
For additional insights, consider watching the introductory video available at here.
Modules in MSMAware
MSMAware comprises six distinct modules, each offering specialized functionalities:
- Design Storm
- Rational Method
- Time-Area Method
- On-Site Detention
- Detention Basin
- Culvert Design
The Design Storm Module computes and plots design storm IDF curves based on three key guidelines:
- Second Edition of MSMA (2011) with data from 135 storm stations in West Malaysia.
- HP1 (2021) for West Malaysia involving 180 storm stations and averaged storm data on 10 and 20 km grids.
- HP26 (2018) for East Malaysia, accounting for 174 stations and averaged storm data.
Other modules facilitate various computations, such as peak discharges and discharge hydrographs, enabling comprehensive water management practices. Videos explicating these functions can be found at the designated module links.
Benefits of MSMAware
MSMAware offers an array of benefits that enhance its appeal among professionals:
- Instant report generation in PDF or Docx formats for easy editing.
- User-friendly interface with comprehensive online tutorials available.
- Affordable yearly subscription.
- Seamless online access—no installation required.

Developer of MSMAware
The driving force behind MSMAware, Ir. Dr. Quek Keng Hong, is a distinguished figure in the field of urban drainage design. With nearly three decades of experience, Dr. Quek has significantly contributed to engineering practices in Malaysia. He earned his degrees from the renowned University of NSW, Australia, and is a consulting engineer renowned for his involvement in prominent infrastructure projects.
Despite his busy schedule, Dr. Quek actively conducts workshops and seminars focused on educating others about MSMA and its applications.
