A Comprehensive Guide to MSMAware: Revolutionizing Urban Drainage in Malaysia
Urban drainage design has become increasingly vital in tackling the challenges posed by urbanization and climate change. The necessity for precise and efficient water management solutions is paramount, and this is where MSMAware steps in. This post provides an in-depth look at MSMAware, its functionalities, benefits, and the expertise behind its development.
What is MSMAware?
MSMAware is a pioneering software specifically designed to align with MSMA- the Urban Drainage Design Guideline for Malaysia. The acronym MSMA stands for Manual Saliran Mesra Alam Malaysia or the Urban Stormwater Management Manual for Malaysia, published by the Jabatan Pengairan dan Saliran Malaysia (JPS), the Department of Irrigation and Drainage Malaysia.
MSMAware is an online platform that allows users to:
- Compute design storm Intensity-Frequency-Duration (IFD) curves for any location in Malaysia.
- Calculate peak discharges utilizing the Rational Method and discharge hydrographs using the Time-Area Method.
- Design On-Site Detention (OSD) and detention basins or ponds.
To get a brief overview, you can watch the introductory video at: MSMAware Introduction.
Modules Available in MSMAware
MSMAware consists of six comprehensive modules:
- Design Storm
- Rational Method
- Time-Area Method
- On-Site Detention
- Detention Basin
- Culvert Design
The Storm Module computes and plots the design storm IDF curves based on three different design storm guidelines:
- Second Edition of MSMA (2011) covering 135 storm stations in West Malaysia.
- HP1 (2021) for West Malaysia covering 180 storm stations, including averaged storms on 10 and 20 km grids.
- HP26 (2018) for East Malaysia covering 174 stations and averaged storms on similar grids.
Additional functionalities include considering Temporal Patterns, Areal Reduction Factor (ARF), and Climate Change Factor (CCF). Videos are available for further reference, including the Storm Module Video.
Benefits of MSMAware
MSMAware offers numerous advantages for users including:
- Effortless generation of reports in PDF or Docx formats.
- User-friendly interface making it accessible for all.
- Affordable yearly subscriptions providing excellent value.
Some significant benefits include:
- Online access without installation requirements.
- Compliance with MSMA2, HP1, and HP26 standards.
- Capability to compute design storms for over 500 rainfall stations and visualize them on Google Maps.
- Quick and easy OSD and detention basin design capabilities.
- Access to extensive online resources and immediate support.
- Availability of a free version for basic use.
About the Developer
MSMAware was developed by Ir. Dr. Quek Keng Hong, a distinguished figure in the field of urban drainage design in Malaysia. Having acquired all three of his degrees from the renowned University of New South Wales, Dr. Quek possesses nearly three decades of experience and has been instrumental in various major infrastructural projects across the country. His commitment to sharing knowledge is evident through his regular workshops and seminars on MSMA.
